The fourteenth season of the Indian Premier League aka Vivo IPL 2021 has commenced from the 9th of April 2021.

IPL 2021 is being played in India after two years since IPL 2020 had been moved to the UAE because of the Pandemic induced Lockdown. The number of venues has been reduced from 8 to 6 because of the pandemic. All the venues will be bio-secure and will follow strict health guidelines introduced by the BCCI. The six venues selected for IPL 2021 are M Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bangalore, Arun Jaitley Stadium, Delhi, Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad, Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai, M A Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai, and Eden Gardens, Kolkata.

The matches will be played in a round-robin format according to the tradition with each team facing the other twice. This year, the matches are scheduled so that no team plays on its home ground. 56 league matches will be played between the teams after which only 4 teams that stand on the top of the points table qualify for the playoffs.

The Qualifier-1 will be played between the top two teams and the Eliminator match will be played between the bottom 2. The winner of Qualifier-1 enters the final directly while the losing team of Qualifier-1 plays against the winner of the Eliminator match in Qualifier-2. The winner of Qualifier-2 will face the winner of Qualifier-1 in the finals. All the Qualifier matches will be played in the Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad.

All the teams are being led by the same captains as in IPL 2020 except for a few changes. Rohit Sharma will be leading the defending champions' team Mumbai Indians, MS Dhoni will be leading the Chennai Super Kings, Royal Challengers Bangalore will be led by Virat Kohli, David Warner will be leading Sunrisers Hyderabad, KL Rahul will be the captain of Punjab Kings (formerly Kings XI Punjab), and Eoin Morgan will be the captain of Kolkata Knight Riders.

Sanju Samson has been announced the captain of the Rajasthan Royals team as the team dropped Steve Smith. The captain of Delhi Capitals team, Shreyas Iyer had been ruled out of IPL due to an injury and so, Delhi Capitals will be led by Rishabh Pant in IPL 14. Some of the prominent personnel like Mitchell Marsh, Dale Steyn, Mark Wood, Josh Hazlewood, and Josh Phillippe have opted out of IPL 2021.
