YuppTV to raise Rs. 120 cr for expansion, acquisition

YuppTV, the US-based over-the-top (OTT) content player that distributes TV channels through the Internet, will raise $20 million (Rs 120 crore) in the second round funding in the next three months. The company is in talks with the private equity players and it hopes to complete the process in three months.

Serial entrepreneur and founder of the testing tools firm AppLabs Sashi Reddi invested $2.5 million (about Rs. 16 crore) to pick 10 per cent in the firm, promoted by Uday Reddy. Prior to that, it got $5, 00,000 from family rounds to build the firm.

“We will use the proceeds from the second round to increase our customer base, with a focus in the Caribbean and Latin American countries. Part of the funds would also go to acquiring a niche player,” Uday told Business Line here.

With an Indian arm located in Hyderabad, the company conducts research in content distribution technologies. It employs 145 people

The firm, which mostly serves the Indian Diaspora in the US, first found the serious need for Indian television content while working in the Caribbean area for Nortel. It made revenues of $10-11 million last year ended December 2013.

The company has recently launched YuppTV Media Player that allows the users to switch from one gadget to another yet continue to watch the same programme.

Uday said there was a significant change in the customer preferences. “Watching TV is no longer a linear, top-down distribution of content. “Content distribution will become more and more driven by consumers,” he said.

India Abroad Article on Mr. Uday Reddy, CEO, YuppTV

He is bringing India to your TV screens

Udaynandan Reddy had a good thing going. He had a steady well-paying job at Nortel and was looking ahead to earning a mid-career degree from the Kellogg’s School of Management. Instead, the day Reddy was to begin classes in Fall 2006, he consulted the person who had interviewed him there about a plan he had, and went off to set up his own company.

Reddy pulled all his savings, sold all his property in India, withdrew his 401K, importuned friends and family, and scraped together $3 million. All this to start an internet-based provider of Indian television content that relies primarily on subscriptions.

That would seem a darned fool thing to try but for the fact that what Reddy set up was YuppTV, now available on 22 devices and one of the top five downloaded apps on the Samsung Smart TV, which is no mean seller by itself. It helps that, unlike on television, people can watch programs for 10days after the show. All of it for more than 180 channels in 11 languages.

While working around companies that had signed exclusivity deals with mainstream Indian Television channels, YuppTV consolidates its position as a top provider of regional channels.

YuppTV, which among other things is sponsoring the ongoing tour of the United States by singer Shreya Ghoshal, also has a deal with ICICI Bank, which offers discounts to premium users of its money2india service. More importantly, last year YuppTV reported earnings of $11 million.

Sashi Reddi, the man who sold AppLabs to CSC for somewhere in the region of $300 million (the actual figures have not been revealed) has invested $2.5 million into YuppTV, thus earning himself a 10 percent stake in the company and a position on the board. Reddi became the first outside investor in the company. “Sashi Reddi is actively involved in advising from a board perspective, but I think he will be very involved in raising further capital,” Reddy says.

Reddy graduated from the Delhi College of Engineering in 1993 and joined Siemens at an opportune time since this was when digital telephone exchanges were first showing up in India. In two years Reddy joined Nortel, where he moved up from system engineering to product management, business development and sales.

As part of his job he whizzed through 50 countries, during which time he was based in Singapore, in the Caribbean, and in the US. He says everywhere he saw Indians who missed cultural content from home.

“Moving to Delhi itself, I lost touch with Telugu,” he says with a laugh. And those separated from India by space and time — sometimes by over a century — would be less able to connect with a culture.

In 2005, Reddy managed Nortel’s deployment of a key 3G eVideo network in Trinidad and Tobago (where 38 percent of the population is of Indian origin). That gave him the confidence to work on YuppTV, then called Global Takeoff.

There were multiple challenges to deal with, though. At one level, he had to convince media companies entrenched in a television-based culture to consider an online option, work past the exclusivity deals that Dish Network had cannily brokered earlier. It was not smooth sailing getting — and keeping — subscribers either.

“Initially, the biggest challenge was that the users didn’t have good broadband to see good-quality video. Lots of people didn’t have unlimited data plans. And, third, people still want to see TV in the living room,” Reddy says, adding that the company is making headway.

Though it attracts millions of visitors every month, YuppTV has under 100,000 subscribers. It has other problems to consider — the kind that dogs Netflix and YouTube, particularly the issue of Internet provides throttling high-bandwidth content. Reddy says that worries him, even though his customers have not complained yet.

“This technology is really dependent on the Internet,” he says. “Net neutrality (which says there can be no discrimination of content on any basis) is very important to us. Having said that… we could do a lot of partnerships with these big players.” ‘Partnerships’ mean making financial deals with Internet providers to avoid YuppTV content being throttled.

Reddy says the current 1.5 MB/s speed that is standard is sufficient for his service. Besides, YuppTV is looking forward to moving from the H.264 video codec to H.265, which, he says, could reduce bandwidth use by 30-40 percent.

“The amount of (bandwidth) our customers use is much, much higher than do Netflix (users) because people (subscribing to us) watch five hours a day,” he says “So far we’ve not seen customers complaining of streaming as an issue. But going forward, as people get 40 MB downlinks we are trying to make sure the experience is maintained, despite throttling.”

He adds that YuppTV is gambling that Internet providers will not throttle content all the time: “So we do a kind of adaptive bit rate streaming (where video quality is adjusted according to the bandwidth available).” Reddy says he has learned a lot about entrepreneurship since 2006.

“It takes a lot of passion, a lot of focus. (There’s a) a lot to be conservative about — (for example), not overspending your cash flows. These are some (lessons) I’ve learned the hard way. We used to operate from a basement in Atlanta. Even in India, we used to share an office,” he says. “Good thing I did not dilute (my equity) a lot while building this. You can take VC (venture capitalist) money, but nobody gives (anything) free, right? We’re in a very good situation, that way.”

Reddy’s future plans include making YuppTV the number one brand in the Indian expatriate market, and bringing over-the-top content to India in a big way, despite provider worries about piracy. For now though, Reddy is most happy that even rickshaw drivers in Hyderabad check the news on their mobile phones using YuppTV.

Global Takeoff to launch video services in India next year
Will raise $15-million equity to fuel subscriber acquisitions, form overseas JVs

HYDERABAD, December 2, 2013:Global Takeoff, a Hyderabad-based provider of converged digital entertainment, communication and advertising, is in the process of rolling out its over-the-top (OTT) video services in the Indian market in the third quarter of the 2014, said chairman and chief executive officer Mr. Uday Reddy.

OTT refers to delivery of video and audio over the Internet without a multiple system operator being involved in the control or distribution of the content. Global Takeoff plans to offer its converged OTT content through YuppTV.com, its live Internet TV channel streaming platform, to the Indian homes having smart TVs.

“The product, which will be integrated with a set-top-box, will be ready by the second quarter of 2014. We are working out the modalities of pricing, which will probably be on par with the current Indian direct-to-home or cable price points,” Reddy told Business Standard.

YuppTV currently delivers more than 150 Indian TV channels, 4,500 daily videos and over 600 movies, reaching out to six million viewers, mostly India diaspora, across South Asian countries, the US, Europe, Australia and Canada through paid subscription. At present, it offers free-to-air channels in India.

YuppTV is now one among the Top-5 downloaded apps on Samsung TV and the only South Asian app out of the 11 applications that has been approved on Sony PlayStation3 and PlayStation4. It is set to be launched on Microsoft's XBox shortly.

According to Reddy, the proposed OTT services to be offered on public Internet in India would include movies-on-demand and Catch-Up TV, a video-on-demand service wherein television shows are available for days after the original broadcast, besides live streaming of TV channels.

“This (OTT services) is the way the future of TV is seen now. We, however, will be a little cautious in the first year of launch as there are still challenges in terms of broadband deployment in India,” he said, adding that the concept was expected to takeoff all of a sudden in a big way in the country in the next two years, with adequate broadband infrastructure and unlimited data plans in place by then.

Over-the-top services is already a mainstream in the US, with the third-party content providers being Netflix, Hulu, NowTV, myTV and WhereeverTV.

“We are in the process of raising $10 million-$15 million equity in three months. We intend to utilise the proceeds for subscriber acquisition, form joint ventures to roll out OTT services in West Asia countries and in Trinidad and Tobago, besides making small acquisitions here and there that would bring ethnic content to us,” he said, adding that the company was expecting its revenues to touch $10 million this year, as against $8 million in the last financial year.

YuppTV Delivers First Turnkey OTT Live TV and VOD Service for 4 Screens
Internet-based Video Distribution and Monetization Service Delivers Live TV and VOD Anywhere in the World

ORLANDO March 21, 2011:Global Takeoff Inc., a leading global provider of converged digital entertainment and advertising solutions, today announced the YuppTV platform-as-a-service (PaaS) solution for content owners, broadcasters, telecom and mobile operators. YuppTV is a converged over-the-top (OTT) service that delivers live TV and video-on-demand over four screens – TVs, PCs, smartphones and internet tablets. For the first time, video content providers and operators have access to a turnkey, internet-based solution for distributing and monetizing live TV and on-demand video services - anywhere in the world.

“Today there is a lot of TV content that lacks wide cable distribution - such as local news and sports events, which are limited to regional areas and up-and-coming TV channels that either have little or sporadic distribution,” said Uday Reddy, founder and CEO of Global Takeoff. “But content providers would like to expand the reach of these programs by leveraging internet technologies. At the same time, internet-savvy consumers are starting to expect the ability to have any TV and video content delivered to any internet-enabled screen - anywhere in the world. This trend has content providers and operators scrambling to find new internet-based solutions to distribute and monetize video globally. YuppTV offers a converged global video experience for content providers, operators and consumers alike.”

The YuppTV platform enables broadcasters, telecom and mobile operators to deliver the same content over TVs, PCs, smartphones and other internet-enabled devices, without investing in multiple technologies. YuppTV is based on a unique turnkey platform-as-a-service model, which removes the video distribution capital and monetization responsibilities from content owners, content aggregators and operators.

“YuppTV can open up new markets,” explained Reddy. “Many local TV stations want to extend the reach of their news, sports and entertainment content beyond regional boundaries and keep their audience informed and entertained while away from home. Telecom operators can use YuppTV to deliver live TV in regional areas where the copper ‘last mile’ is unable to deliver service. Movie producers who would like to release films online to avoid piracy can also benefit from distributing their content on YuppTV. YuppTV is a low-risk, high-value solution for tapping into these emerging markets.”

The YuppTV PaaS is an end-to-end content delivery platform for managing live and network-based video-on-demand services.
