Tamil Nadu Assembly Election Updates 2021 Live

Tamil Nadu State Legislative Assembly Elections are scheduled to happen in the month of May. The Election is the first without the presence of two major Politicians Jayalalitha & M Karunanidhi. Jayalalitha, who had been the leader of the AIADMK party had served as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu 6 times before her death in 2016. The opposition leader M Karunanidhi of DMK party had been the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu over 5 times between 1969 & 2011 before his demise in 2018.

While both the major parties AIADMK & DMK are still in play, some new parties have emerged in competition to them. In addition to this, the entry of Film Actor Kamal Haasan in Politics is also an interesting development in Tamil Nadu Politics.

Tamil actor Kamal Haasan announced his entry into politics with his own party Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) in 2018. Senthimizhan Seeman, who started the Tamil nationalist Party in 2010 is another Politician who is competing in the elections. V K Sasikala, a key player in the AIADMK party is another such emerging Politician contesting in the Tamil Nadu elections 2021.

Alongside the existing leaders E Palaniswami, the current Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu State and M K Stalin, leader of DMK Party, the entry of the above-mentioned leaders made the elections a national interest. Analysts predict that the elections might disrupt the power distribution between the two parties and may allow the rise of new parties.

Tamil Nadu has 234 seats in its Assembly and of these, 118 seats are required to acquire a majority. Currently, 135 seats are held by the AIADMK party and 98 are held by DMK. The elections are scheduled on 28th May 2021.
